The brief experience there solidified we really lucked out choosing The Montage and can’t wait to plan our return visit. There were so many people everywhere we turned it felt more like a well oiled cruise ship operation than a relaxing retreat. ![]() While the service was signature Four Seasons, we were surprised to see how crowded and cramped the pool area was and beyond the prime the facilities looked. Just for fun, we did the 1 hour drive over to the Four Seasons for lunch. (Full access included with room.) Food and drinks on property aren’t cheap but exceptional in flavor and quality. For a quiet pool, the spa has another pool, hot tub, and separate men’s and women’s areas with hot tub, dry sauna and steam rooms. (Reserved for $400 per day.) Steps from the nearby beach, the “Beach Club” has another pool, hot tub and full bar. The pool deck has four interconnected pools, two hot tubs and full service drinks and food delivered to your lounge chairs or private cabana. Lower floors are considered garden view and upper floors are premier ocean view. Since it was designed as a premium timeshare, the rooms are fully equipped residences with living room, dining area, full kitchen, laundry, 2+ bathrooms, and balconies that would compare in size to a standard room at the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons. We learned it was originally built as a timeshare resort for the adjacent Ritz Carlton, the property was acquired by Montage several years after construction and is a mix of hotel guests, fractional and full time ownership. Note: It’s hard to believe at this price level, but room rates do not include the $63 daily resort fee.Kapalua |0.7km from city center The Montage exceed all of our expectations. (Look for Kaina’s portrait by local artist Pegge Hopper, supplementing the series she did for the Kapalua Bay Hotel.) The 30,000-sq.-ft., two-story Spa Montage Kapalua Bay includes a vast fitness center with a raft of weekly classes, infinity-edge pool, and well-stocked boutique. Still, you don’t want to miss the chance to “talk story” with cultural advisor Silla Kaina over lei-making, ukulele classes, or another of the free Hawaiian-themed activities. It’s hard to leave the cocoon of the roomy villas, which offer gourmet kitchens, high-end linens and robes, spa-like bathrooms, and lanais or balconies with massive daybeds. ![]() The low density-and astronomical prices-means there’s never a crush at the terraced Sunset Pool with gorgeous Lanai and Molokai views, or the more intimate infinity-edged Beach Club Pool, or anywhere else on the beautifully landscaped grounds. Built on the site of the old Kapalua Bay Hotel, this 24-acre compound offers just 50 impeccably furnished rental residences, from one-bedroom to four-bedroom (1,250–4,050 sq. ![]()
